Starting a Graduate Student Parent Interest Group at USC
I've been talking to all potential presidential candidates in regards to getting student-parent issues/interest group (goal to become a social work cacaus) and all have been very supportive in regards to planning and supporting effective policies, education, and change. In class, I'm noticing a salient trend--more students are becoming parents. They are pregnant or having children. Since we do not have a unique list serve for student parents, I've been getting emails of student parents and presenting the idea of starting an interest group while explaining the benefits of it. The first step right now is establishing consistent communication and finding the parents and student who are interested in the issue for communication purposes. Hopefully, we can create an email group. Every year we have a orientation for non-traditional student parents for incoming USC graduate students. I'm going to ask if I could present at the orientation and hopefully get emails and also share some of my experience as student parent, just so they understand what it is like. I'm glad that USC has this kind of orientation in regards to "adding diversity" to the university, but we need to take this a step further and actually start planning to change the school policies that could support student parents. Journey continues...
